Chapter 18

Luther Steel’s body streamed sweat.

Living alone as he had since accepting the assignment to lead the special task force and being separated from his wife and children, he had developed a rather regimented way of life.

When the alarm rang, he jumped out of bed immediately because there was no one to awaken him after “just another couple of minutes, baby,” and he had never trusted snooze alarms. After answering nature and while his water heated for instant decaffeinated coffee, he took a quick shave. He had coffee, juice, toast, and a vitamin pill and then a quick workout. He had found bodybuilding the perfect conditioning for a man on a tight, sometimes inflexible schedule, and he practiced it religiously. When time allowed, he did a routine each evening as well. If anything, he was more fit than ever.

He turned on the shower just as he heard the telephone ring. “Shit.” He turned off the water, almost slipped stepping over the side of the tub, dripped water as he exited the bathroom and walked across the living room of his apartment, and caught the phone on the fourth ring.

He’d gotten a late start after being up all hours with Rudolph Cerillia and Holden and Detective Shepherd and a more detailed meeting with Mr. Cerillia afterward. Cerillia himself insisted, “Sleep in this morning, Luther, you look like you could use it.”

There had been no evening workout. Just shrugging out of his clothes and falling into bed had been an effort.

“This is Steel.”

It was Clark Pietrowski; the old guy was as tough as he looked. “You just up?”

“Why?”

“Didn’t turn on the tube, did ya?”

“Why?”

“That asshole Kaminsky raided the Patriots’ base camp; killed some, took some prisoners, and is gonna hold a damn news conference on the scene, live, in about”—Pietrowski was apparently consulting his watch —“about ten minutes.”

“That moron.”

“You always have a kind word to say for somebody, Luther.”

“Pick me up—five or six minutes.”

“Should I maybe bring something special?”

“Bring Tom LeFleur and Bill Runningdeer. Shit!” He slammed down the receiver and walked quickly back toward the bathroon He always planned his time so he could take a long shower. As he stepped under the water, still adjusting it with one hand and rubbing shampoo into his hair with the other hand, he remembered the old Robert Burns line about “best laid schemes.” As he got the water right, he was already washing out the first shot of shampoo.

What if Ralph Kaminsky had busted David Holden? Holden was a man whose discretion could be trusted, but not if he thought the whole thing with Director Cerillia was part of a setup for the raid on the camp. If Holden thought that, he would have to be a fool to keep silent about the meeting last night. And what if Holden had gotten himself killed?

Steel rinsed out the second shampooing, already lathering his chest and abdomen.

And as Steel began to wash the lower portion of his body, he was reminded of Ralph Kaminsky. “What
